As this funding has only recently been awarded, we are of course in the very early stages.
However, I am pleased to say that I visited GWRs Customer services Manager (Sarah Bennet) at
Gloucester Station 20th May and had a full discussion on what is required, location and logistics for
the public model railway display we will be putting together for the station. We also had a further
chat around one or two suggestions I made regarding GWR possibly marketing this as part of a
Cotswold Line day out, given the other heritage interests Sarah mentioned at Stroud and Kemble. I
also mentioned our club’s proposed railway display at Gloucester’s British Waterways Museum
which we’d been approached for at a later date.
During our discussion, we agreed upon providing a Gloucester based model/diorama 6ftx2ft to be
displayed adjacent to the ticket office. Details of the specific theme are now being worked out by
our members – which is likely to be a historical context. We also held our club AGM last week
where, in addition to this project, we also decided to look at re-starting our youth section (which
was part of the bid). We are currently in the process of finalising the processes necessary to run a
youth section again and will shortly be convening a meeting on that subject regarding how we re-
open and recruit to the group. One possibility will be school visits as part of that drive.
As regards funding, I originally bid for approx. £700 towards the Youth Section and £300 for the
diorama, although I can see the actual division of costs may change somewhat if we want to
produce a good quality, robust display for Gloucester station. This, I’m sure, will be projected to
some extent in the next month or two during planning.
As a final note, the members are very keen on both these projects and are already getting
involved.
